4 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Contractor To Design And Build Your New Home

Posted on: 23 June 2020

Are you getting ready to hire a home builder to design and build your dream home? Here are a few questions to ask before making any final hiring decisions:

Are Custom Designs Available?

If you don't want to end up with a house that looks like it's been made from a cookie cutter, you should make sure that the designer and builder you decide to hire offers customized design options. While your service provider may show you a series of different base designs to choose from, you should be able to make some changes to those designs to suit your personal preferences. Moving the doorways, changing window sizes, expanding a room, and swapping neutral wall colors for brighter ones are just a few things you should be able to do.

How Long Does the Design Process Take?

You should also find out how long the design process should take your service provider so you can prepare for the construction portion of building your new home. You may expect it to take just a couple of weeks, when in reality, it may take your provider a couple of months to get the blueprints ready. Getting a timeline before the work even starts will help set your expectations properly and minimize the risk of dissatisfaction at any point during the design process.

How Will the Construction Site Be Maintained?

Once construction begins on your home, your property will likely get pretty messy. There is bound to be building materials lying around, and things like nails and empty paint cans will probably build up. So, make sure you know how the construction site will be maintained before hiring a prospective builder to ensure that you won't end up having to deal with cleaning and keeping materials safe yourself.

Will a dumpster be used to manage the garbage? Where will unused materials be stored until they're needed so they don't succumb to weather damage or theft? Make a list of maintenance questions that come to mind so nothing important is forgotten during your initial consultation meeting.

Are Inspections and Permits Included in the Service Fee?

Part of the building process will include having the site inspected and getting permits from the county to legally build your home. Your home designer and builder should handle these things for you to minimize the chance of delays and to save you some time and stress. Make sure that your service provider will hire the inspectors and work with your county's building department themselves.
