Insulation Will Keep Your House Warm

Posted on: 6 December 2022

Insulating your house is the best way to make sure that your house stays at a stable temperature and that you are cutting your utility bills. If your house didn't have enough insulation when it was built or you just want to beef up the R-value of your existing insulation, you need to start looking around at the different insulation products until you find the one that will work best for you.

R-Value

Before you decide what insulation you want to add to your house, you need to understand what R-value is. R-value measures the ability of any insulation to resist any heat flow through the material. The higher the number, the better the insulative ability. The nice thing is that R-values are cumulative. That means that if the current R-value of the insulation in your house is only an R10, you can add more insulation and get it higher. Adding in insulation that is R-20 will give you an overall R rating of 30. Once you have a basic understanding of R-value, you can start figuring out what kind of insulation product you want to use in your house. There are several categories of insulation that you can choose from.

Batt Insulation

When you think of insulation, batt insulation is probably the first place that you go. This kind of insulation is cut into strips that can just be placed in your wall, floor, or ceiling in between joists and studs. The most common type is the bright pink fiberglass rolls that can be trimmed to size and shoved inside a cavity.

Loose Fill/Blown Insulation

The reason that these are combined is that they are generally made up of the same kinds of materials. They can be placed in your house in a couple of different ways. One is that a bag of insulating material can be opened and poured into the cavity. The other option is to cut holes into the cavity, insert a hose attached to a blower that is full of the insulating material, and then blow it into the wall.

Foam Insulation

Foam insulation is an expanding foam. It gets sprayed into the cavity and then it expands to fill the space. It can be retrofitted into your house or it can be installed when your house is first getting built.

When you are deciding which kind of insulation you want to have in your house, talk to the contractor who will be doing the insulation. Find out what kind is going to give you the best R-value and which is going to work best for your situation. For more information, contact a company like All Seasons Building Materials Company, Inc.
